About Bayfront Maritime Center

The Bayfront Maritime Center (BMC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to delivering hands-on maritime education and community outreach through experiential programming. Located on the shores of Presque Isle Bay in Erie, Pennsylvania, BMC provides opportunities for individuals of all ages to engage with the maritime world through activities like sailing, paddling, boat building, and navigation. These immersive experiences help foster a connection to Erie’s maritime heritage while developing practical skills and environmental awareness. A cornerstone of BMC’s programming is the Erie Adaptive Sailing Experience (EASE), which makes sailing accessible to children and adults with physical and mental challenges. Utilizing specially designed Hansa Dinghies, participants are empowered to take the helm, building confidence, independence, and self-esteem through the excitement of sailing. BMC is also home to a major historical project—the construction of a replica of the historic Schooner Porcupine. This vessel will serve as a Schoolship for Presque Isle Bay, providing a unique, hands-on STEM classroom that integrates history, science, and maritime skills. As a historically significant vessel with ties to the War of 1812 and various other roles throughout its service, Porcupine will offer educational programs, charters, and special events, enhancing both local maritime heritage and tourism. With her shallow draft and modern materials, the Porcupine will be an agile, sustainable asset capable of visiting ports around Lake Erie, bringing history and education to life for students and the wider community.
