As of December 2022, almost 9000 medical vacancies were waiting to be filled. On top of that, the NHS lost over 10,000 staff members between 2021-22 because of a lack of work-life balance. Hospitals are turning to locum staff to fill gaps, but when £3 billion of the NHS budget gets spent on locums per year, it’s not a cost-effective solution.
