About Be Brave for Isla

Be Brave for Isla was founded by Jake and Hannah Smith after the death of their daughter, Isla Marie Smith. Isla was diagnosed with a life-limiting genetic disorder and passed away at seven months old. For a while, they felt as if they died, too - but Isla has shown them she is always near, and she is just as alive today in their hearts as she was on earth. They feel called to serve other bereaved parents and have dedicated their lives to sharing her story and supporting other families like theirs. In the United States, 1 in 4 pregnancies ends in miscarriage or stillbirth. In Alabama, 443 infants died in NICUs alone in 2021, an 8.6% increase from the year before. Despite these statistics, there are limited resources for holistic grief support in Birmingham and Huntsville for bereaved parents. Losing a child is isolating, and the emotional toll of this loss affects every aspect of a bereaved parent's life. We believe access to counseling services, financial assistance, and peer support are crucial in empowering bereaved parents to grieve openly, celebrate their child, and feel less alone.
