About Beauty for Survivors
Founded by Rafaella Rougier: celebrity makeup artist, assault survivor, and stylist in the beauty and fashion industry. All of their work came by word-of-mouth and, prior to a series of life-altering events that turned their world upside-down, they worked with celebrities, photographers and stylists around the world, bringing their signature calm, sensitivity and intuitive aesthetic to every set and every shoot. When injuries from repeated assault threatened to end their life, Rafaella put their career on hold and prioritized their healing journey, developing a deep relationship with beauty not only as a form of art, but as a way of life, and a path of healing. As a result of ongoing conversations with clients, as well as their own story of loss, courage, and recovery as a survivor and disabled warrior, Rafaella founded BeautyxSurvivors to support fellow survivors and allies, while spearheading a new movement of embodied hope in the beauty industry, and in the world. “In and out of fashion shows, international film festivals, editorial shoots, commercials, shopping malls & cosmetic counters - one thing that remained the same was the story I heard, over and over, from nearly every person who sat in my makeup chair: a story of survival. And stories of simple things like colors, and makeup, and community, and the power of coming home to your body after having your voice stolen from you by abuse, trauma and violence. And now, after nearly a decade and many iterations later, Beauty for Survivors is coming into its own: as that conversation that started, 25 years ago, when I first picked up a makeup brush and put color on a friend's face. A conversation that has grown and taken on many dimensions and nuances, a conversation that many have tried (and failed) to silence, a conversation that now has a place to call home.”
