No matter how great the chaos, we have learned from personal and professional experience that while hoarding may be a mental health disorder, it consists primarily of a collection of unhelpful behaviors perpetuated by thoughts and beliefs that no longer serve the best interests of an individual. While there can also be anxiety, trauma, loss, and attention challenges, all which comprise complicating factors for this problem, we believe that hoarding is still most often about behaviors that are a result of myriad unhelpful beliefs. And the good news is that behavior, thoughts, and beliefs can all be changed! Life can be better. And each of us has within us the power to change our thinking in order to support a vision for our lives that reflects who we truly are.
