Believe The Hypo has a mission, to enhance and assist the lives of Type 1 Diabetics in managing their condition; by education, discipline and support. Believe The Hypo (BTH) has been developed to support a community. Type 1 Diabetes is a disease that many are not aware of, or perhaps are, but confuse it with the now infamous Type 2 Diabetes. In reality, they are worlds apart. Type 1 Diabetics (T1D’s) are afflicted by the continual struggle to maintain a balanced blood glucose control. Their pancreas has stopped producing the hormone Insulin or rather the cells that produce Insulin are being killed as an autoimmune reaction. A reaction to what? we don’t know. Every minute of every day is spent checking their blood glucose levels (BGL’s), calculating the nutritional value of every meal and injecting insulin to counteract the rise in glucose that is produced when they eat. It is tireless and perennial. So why do we have to go to such lengths? When a T1D’s glucose levels rise, they can go much higher than a normal person. Over time this results in toxification of the blood and damages organs. T1D’s are at a substantially higher risk of cardiovascular disease, blindness, limb amputation and kidney failure. Despite the severity of this disease, the knowledge around it is still poor and the guidance and support by the medical profession is often conflicting and outdated. Every T1D is different and is affected by the disease differently. That is why it is so difficult to treat and manage. Technology is having a major impact on this but there is only so far it can go. The responsibility rests with just one person to manage their own disease. Believe The Hypo has been born through exposure and experience with the diagnosis, management and treatment of Type 1 Diabetes. It’s aim is to educate and support all T1D’s and the people affected by this insidious disease. M.A.P = Meaning. Altruism. Purpose.
