Established on May 15, 1772, Berkeley County is in the eastern region of West Virginia in the Interstate 81 corridor. and is positioned between Maryland and Virginia and within a two-hour drive of Washington, D.C. West Virginia’s second oldest county, Berkeley County is governed by a five-member County Commission. Located at the gateway to the Shenandoah Valley, Berkeley County is West Virginia's state’s second-largest county by population and fastest-growing. Berkeley County is comprised of 321 square miles and the current population estimate is 126,069. As the budget-balancing arm of the Berkeley County government, the County Commission also oversees planning, development, engineering and inspections; purchasing, information technology, community corrections and resource recovery services.
