About Beta Phi Mu Honor Society
Beta Phi Mu was founded in 1948 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign by a group of leading librarians and library educators. It was established to recognize and encourage scholastic achievement among library and information studies students. Membership in Beta Phi Mu is by invitation only, by accredited or recognized programs granting Masters level degrees in library and information studies. In 1969, Beta Phi Mu was formally admitted to membership in the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS). ACHS certifies college and university honor societies, setting standards for organizational excellence and for scholastic eligibility. In 1998, Beta Phi Mu became an official affiliate of the American Library Association, the leading professional organization for librarians. Beta Phi Mu's headquarters and business office are currently in Philadelphia, PA. Its archival collection is maintained at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign archives.
