About Better Taxes For A Better America
Better Taxes for a Better America (BTBA) is a national funder table working to mobilize and align philanthropic resources in support of the movement to advance fairer tax policy, increase revenue, and expand tax credits that benefit families and everyday people. We believe that a just tax system is foundational to a multiracial democracy where everyone—no matter their race, income, or zip code—has access to the resources they need to thrive. Our vision is a dramatically improved tax code that reshapes the economy to prioritize everyday people, is racially just, and provides ample resources for our future. That's why we're helping to build a well-resourced and diverse ecosystem of effective and resilient organizations working for better taxes at the state and federal levels. The BTBA funder table has dozens of members, including institutional funders, individual donors, and labor partners. We operate in close partnership with Fair Share America, a field table composed of grassroots, policy, and advocacy organizations in 32 states that are fighting for equitable and adequate public revenue. This partnership helps ensure funders remain grounded in the reality of local organizing and enables deeper coordination between philanthropic investments and on-the-ground campaigns. In 2024, BTBA launched a Funder Learning Cohort to support philanthropic leaders in deepening their understanding of the state tax landscape and identifying high-impact strategies to support organizing, narrative change, and legislative advocacy. Through immersive site visits, cohort members are building a shared framework for funding tax justice as a cross-cutting strategy to advance economic and racial equity.
