About BFI (Bas Fisher Invitational)

Bas Fisher Invitational (BFI) is an artist-run alternative art space founded in 2004 in response to artists’ need for a venue where artists could experiment, share ideas, and build community in Miami. BFI received 501(c)(3) status and became W.A.G.E. certified in 2015. As the first W.A.G.E certified organization in Florida, BFI’s commitment to paying artists a fair amount for their labor has prompted many other organizations to follow. Since its founding in 2004, BFI has presented over 150 site-specific projects, including exhibitions, lectures, performances, and events that adapt to the shifting social, environmental and economic realities of South Florida. BFI acted as an early launchpad for many renowned artists, including Coral Morphologic, Jen Stark, Alejandro Cardenas, Ryan Trecartin, Jessica Dickenson, Jamilah Sabur, and Jillian Mayer, among others. BFI has operated exhibition spaces in the Design District (2004-2012), downtown Miami (2012-2016) and Miami Beach (2021-2022), and is currently focused on presenting site-specific, logistically-complex programs throughout Miami-Dade county. In 2010 BFI launched their signature WEIRD MIAMI bus tours. This program continues today and serves as a critical foil for skeptics of Miami’s potential, offering the general public a compelling and unfiltered look at the city through the eyes of artists who derive inspiration from its subtropical secrets. From 2020-23, BFI partnered with Bridge Initiative to found WATERPROOF MIAMI, a presenting platform focused on ecological issues impacting Florida. In 2021, BFI launched HEAT EXCHANGE, a reciprocal residency program founded on the belief that local artists can drive infrastructure-level enhancements to better support cultural production at home. Programs have been funded by the National Endowment for the Arts, John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, and Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, as well as state and local governments.
