About BHDD Office of Mental Health
Effective April 28, 2025, South Carolina Act No. 3 of 2025 established the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities, which consists of Office of Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities, the Office of Mental Health, and the Office of Substance Use Services. The BHDD Office of Mental Health's mission is to support the recovery of people with mental illnesses. The Office provides clinical services to approximately 100,000 patients each year, about 30,000 of whom are children. As South Carolina’s public mental health system, the BHDD Office of Mental Health provides outpatient mental health care through a network of 16 community mental health centers and associated clinics serving all 46 counties, and inpatient psychiatric treatment in three state hospitals.
