About Big Apple Performing Arts: Home of NYCGMC and YPC
Big Apple Performing Arts is the non-profit management company for the New York City Gay Men's Chorus and Youth Pride Chorus. The New York City Gay Men’s Chorus is celebrating its 37th Anniversary and is one of the oldest and possibly the most well-known chorus in the LGBTQ choral movement. NYCGMC’s commitment to equality for LGBTQ citizens is matched by their commitment to fabulous singing, and their musicianship and professionalism has connected with audiences in all five boroughs as well as across the globe. Able to perform in a wide range of vocal styles, from classical to pop, jazz, gospel and Broadway, NYCGMC has worked with acclaimed talents in every genre: Marilyn Horne, Roberta Peters, Barbara Cook, Elaine Stritch, Stephen Sondheim, Kelli O’Hara, Carolee Carmello, Victoria Clark, Martha Wash, and Sia—to name just a few. NYCGMC performs three main concerts a year, and also runs the Connect program, a series of smaller concerts that aims to engage people in all corners of New York City. The Chorus is led by Artistic Director Dr. Charles Beale and Interim Executive Director of Big Apple Performing Arts Jason Cannon. Youth Pride Chorus YPC harnesses the power of the performing arts to galvanize lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and straight young people ages 13-22 as agents of change. YPC refuses homophobia, bullying, and all forms of hate by boldly asserting the joy, diversity, strength, and pride of today's youth. YPC singers discover their own power by empowering others in schools, online, and for the general public through electrifying performances of the highest caliber. YPC has performed as guest artists at the GLAAD Media Awards, GLSEN's Respect Awards, Broadway Backwards at Lincoln Center, and with Cyndi Lauper on her True Colors Tour. YPC is a joint program between Big Apple Performing Arts and the LGBT Community Center's Center Youth program. Since 2005, YPC has been under the artistic direction of Wes Webb.
