About Big Dave's Big Gift

At the age of twenty-four, David Christopher Turner was diagnosed with Stage IV lymphoma. Throughout his courageous sixteen-month battle, David’s great strength and unfailing concern for others inspired those who learned of his story in the community and far beyond. During the last two weeks of his life, David worked relentlessly to establish a foundation - his legacy to the world. “Big Dave’s Big Gift,” a non-profit public charity dedicated to assisting in funding hematological stem cell transplants for those demonstrating financial need was born. David’s concern for raising awareness about cancer led to this foundation’s commitment of providing youth with opportunities that engender healthful and productive living. Through generous donations of concerned individuals and responsible management of those donations by the National Transplant Assistance Fund, over $25,000 was retained for a stem cell transplant that David was not able to afford and, due to relapse, unable to receive. As a result, in memory of David Turner, as of February, 2010, $9500 in challenge grants has been awarded to each of 11 individuals in need of stem cell transplants. Big Dave’s Big Gift sponsors fun, educational opportunities for young people. We promote optimal mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health, leading to a higher overall quality of life and also aiding in resistance to disease. Young people are encouraged to cultivate new interests and develop innate abilities through participation in activities involving the arts and humanities, physical activity, technology, and philanthropy. Young people in mainstream educational settings and hospitalized pediatric cancer patients/survivors will collaborate to complete mutually-rewarding projects in areas including the arts and humanities,
