About Big Wave Group

The Big Wave Group is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a vibrant intentional community for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Residents living on the Big Wave campus—of different backgrounds, ability levels, and ages—will thrive in an environment that encourages social interaction, community engagement, and personal development, based on their individual needs and choices. The Big Wave non-profit works in conjunction with the parent-driven Big Wave Community Co-op to provide oversight and guidance for the community. Family involvement is a cornerstone of Big Wave. Big Wave offers varied opportunities for residents, such as a Culinary Academy and Day Program which will be run by non-profit One Step Beyond, where they can attend a day program if they choose. The Big Wave Farm helps residents learn to grow their own food while learning new skills. The farm also serves multiple Bay Area day programs, which are community-based programs for individuals with disabilities, served by a county regional center. They visit and work with us on a regular schedule, helping to plant vegetables, flowers and lavender, harvest strawberries, start seeds in the greenhouse, prepare beds for planting, and participate in chicken duties. Farm-related micro businesses help support the farm and will soon provide internships and employment opportunities for people with disabilities. Future plans to lease space on the property may provide employment and volunteer opportunities. Big Wave is near the beach and harbor, providing residents with a host of recreational opportunities in a coastal setting, integrated into the greater community.
