Textile printing is considered particularly destructive to the environment, mainly due to the source of raw materials, the various oils which contribute to the creation of ink and the volume of chemicals it consumes. Some of the environmental impacts include air pollution, e.g. releasing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the atmosphere due to solvent use, handling and disposing of hazardous wastes. However, the industry is moving towards more economically sustainable solutions. BInc is a novel biogenic ink for textile printing. Our colours come from nature and are created by microbes, thus supporting biodiversity. BInc offers a circular printing solution that is fully biodegradable and non-toxic. Our inks are made from renewable resources with low energy consumption. One of our value added goals is to use other industry’s waste streams as feedstock for the production of our colours. The women-lead partnership consists of biodesign collective Living Colour from The Netherlands represented by SME Studio Ilfa Siebenhaar, and Vienna Textile Lab (VTL), a biotech/fashion tech company that produces and sells biogenic textile dyes and pigments. VTL and Living Colour are fully aligned in their social responsibility awareness, values and strategy.
