About Bistum Limburg
Die Geschichte des Bistums Limburg beginnt mit dem Zusammenbruch der weltlichen und kirchlichen Machtstrukturen in Europa als Folge der Französischen Revolution. Durch den Reichsdeputationshauptschluss im Jahre 1803, dem letzten Gesetz des Heiligen Römischen Reiches, werden Gebiete der alten geistlichen Kurfürstentümer Mainz und Trier den nassauischen Herzogtümern zugeschlagen, darunter das Gebiet um Limburg, das bis dahin den rechtsrheinischen Teil des Trierer Bistums darstellt. Das Herzogtum Nassau mit Regierungssitz in Wiesbaden initiiert zusammen mit der freien Reichsstadt Frankfurt die Errichtung eines eigenen Bistums. Am 23. November 1827 ist es soweit: Das Bistum wird gegründet und der erste Bischof, Jakob Brand, nimmt seine Amtsgeschäfte auf. Das Bistum hat zum damaligen Zeitpunkt 134 Pfarreien mit 175.000 Katholiken. Die ehemalige Stiftskirche St. Georg, deren eigene Geschichte bis in das 10. Jahrhundert zurück reicht, wird zur Kathedrale, zur Kirche des Bischofs von Limburg. Im Gebiet des Bistums leben heute rund 2,4 Millionen Menschen, davon sind etwa 580.000 Katholikinnen und Katholiken.
