About Black Boy Biographies

Black Boy Biographies is dedicated to empowering young Black boys by sharing the obstacles notable Black men overcame in their youth. Founded by Lake Femister, a business marketing student at Virginia State University, the series highlights narratives of success and resilience. Growing up as an avid reader, Lake discovered that books—and more importantly, understanding them—were crucial to his educational progress and navigating the challenges of college. His guiding principle: keep moving forward until it clicks! The series addresses critical issues like illiteracy and its direct impact on the prison population. A student who is not reading at grade level by the end of third grade is four times less likely to graduate high school on time, or at all. In fact, third-grade literacy assessments are often used to determine the number of prison beds private corporations will need as they forecast their profits. Our goal is to end the school-to-prison pipeline and create pathways to prosperity through literacy and strategic planning. While the formula for success is known, it is often not effectively taught or monitored. These biographies, paired with a tailored curriculum and key partnerships, aim to foster the mindset needed to make positive, life-changing choices.
