About Black College Success
The mission of Black College Success (BCS) is to increase Black student access and success in college and careers. We partner with South Los Angeles high schools and various colleges, including HBCUs, to create pathways for success. Our goal is to empower Black students from South LA to attend and graduate from four-year colleges. Our programs address gaps in college readiness, persistence, and completion due to long-standing educational inequities. BCS recruits and works with students from partner high schools in South LA. Since its founding in 2021, BCS has partnered with 11 high schools, including Crenshaw High, Mann UCLA Community School, New Designs Charter Schools-Watts, LACES, Hamilton High School, Westbrook Academy, Manual Arts, View Park Preparatory High School, Centennial High School, and Inglewood High School (added in the ’23-24 academic year). BCS collaborates with colleges nationwide, including HBCUs, to support students with equity programs, financial aid, and wrap-around services like affordable housing, counseling, and scholarships. After admission, students, many from low-income, first-generation backgrounds, are assigned a BCS success manager who provides support with financial aid, on-campus resources, academic tutoring, mentoring, and career connections, along with a BCS-sponsored scholarship and laptop.
