About Black Mental Health Canada
Black Mental Health Canada (BMHC) is a non-profit organization founded in 2019 with the aim of addressing the mental health needs of diverse Black communities in Canada. Our mission is to improve the mental well-being of Black individuals and communities by advocating for culturally competent mental health services and promoting community education and empowerment. BMHC is driven by a passionate team of volunteers who understand the unique challenges faced by the Black community and are committed to working towards solutions. We recognize that there are significant disparities in mental health care faced by the Black community and that anti-Black racism and racial trauma pose a threat to their mental health. BMHC is committed to working with community stakeholders to address these issues and provide culturally safe, accessible, and affordable mental health care. Our goal is to ensure that every Black individual has access to the mental health support they need to thrive. To achieve our mission, we employ a range of activities and initiatives, including public speaking engagements, workshops, and the provision of information and resources. We also collaborate with mental health providers, organizations, and stakeholders to promote culturally responsive mental health services and to address the root causes of disparities in mental health care. Our focus is on creating systemic change and improving access to care for Black communities. BMHC is dedicated to considering the social determinants of health in our work. We understand that poverty, housing insecurity, lack of access to nutritious food, and other social and economic factors can have a significant impact on mental health. Our goal is to address these factors and provide support that addresses the holistic needs of Black individuals and communities.
