About Black Women at Edinburgh
Black Women* at Edinburgh (BWE) is a student-led society committed to empowering Black women and those who identify with Black femininity—especially from African, African Diaspora, and Caribbean backgrounds—across the University of Edinburgh and within the broader Edinburgh community. We exist to create an intentional, supportive, and educational space where Black women can thrive academically, professionally, and personally. Through mentorship, personal and career development, and community-building, we aim to help our members navigate university life and prepare for the future. Our purpose is not only to provide support but also to centre and affirm the voices, needs, and realities of Black women in all that we do. Sisterhood is our foundational value, fostering a strong bond of support, solidarity, and kinship among Black women students. We prioritise creating a safe space where every member feels valued, respected, and supported. We are committed to celebrating the achievements of Black women within the University of Edinburgh and across the wider community, recognising and uplifting the contributions that too often go overlooked. Our work is grounded in evidence. Research, including findings published in the Journal of African American Women and Girls in Education, shows that organisations centring Black women can significantly improve academic persistence, personal growth, and mental well-being. These spaces offer mentorship, cultural understanding, and a much-needed sense of belonging. BWE was founded in response to these realities, and we remain committed to building a strong, informed, and resilient community of Black women in Edinburgh.
