About Black Women in Aviation

Black Women in Aviation (BWIA) is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, established in 2022 by Samantha T. Mitchell, dedicated to spotlighting accomplished black women aviators as role models and unlocking the potential of the next generation of aviation professionals following in their footsteps. Our programming not only celebrates the achievements of black women in the industry but also serves as a catalyst for advancing diversity in aviation. Join us as we work towards a future where all individuals, regardless of gender or background, have equal opportunities to soar in the aviation industry. Mitchell–with over 25 years in aviation, and first aircraft maintenance technician at John F Kennedy Airport for Air Jamaica, leadership and aviation professional–recognized the lack of community, mentorship and visibility for black women in her industry and set out to create a dedicated support system. As a beacon for Black women, BWIA stands as a pivotal non-profit organization committed to the empowerment and progression of Black women within the industry. Leveraging mentorship, engagement activities, educational resources, community events and outreach, and cultivating strategic partnerships, BWIA fosters an environment where members can thrive and excel. With a visionary goal to double the representation of Black women in aviation within the next five years, BWIA is not just contributing to the growth of its community but is also a driving force in advocating for and enhancing diversity across the aviation landscape.
