About Black Women's Institute for Health - Health For All Black Women

The Black Women’s Institute for Health (BWIH) is a national, Black-led, Black-serving charitable organization in Canada committed to transforming the health and wellness outcomes of Black women and girls. Anchored in anti-Black racism, equity, and intersectionality, BWIH recognizes the urgent need to address systemic health disparities shaped by racism, gender, socioeconomic factors, and colonial legacies. BWIH’s work is guided by community voices and data. The Voices Unheard: Vital Signs Survey for Black Women is the first coast-to-coast survey gathering data on Black women’s health outcomes in Canada, providing critical insights to drive policy change and community advocacy. This data-driven approach strengthens their call for policies that prioritize the holistic health of Black women and girls, including physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, and social well-being. The Institute runs culturally relevant programs such as Mothering Minds, focusing on maternal mental health, and offers health education and navigation supports tailored to the realities of Black women. BWIH also builds leadership within the Black community, creating pathways for Black women to shape the policies and practices that affect them. BWIH believes in partnership and collaboration, working with community organizations, government, and health institutions to co-create sustainable change. Their approach is rooted in an Africentric and trauma-informed framework, ensuring programming and advocacy are grounded in cultural understanding and healing. By prioritizing the health of Black women and girls, BWIH envisions healthier Black communities overall. The Institute’s mission is to create systemic change that addresses barriers in health care access and outcomes, ensuring Black women and girls across Canada have the opportunity to thrive.
