About Blue Ridge Virginia Governor's School

The Blue Ridge Virginia Governor’s School (BRVGS) is a regional program for over 600 academically motivated, high-ability high school students from the counties of Fluvanna, Goochland, Greene, Louisa, Madison, Nelson and Orange. The purpose of BRVGS is to serve the academic needs of a community of motivated, high-ability students through a variety of instructional strategies and learning opportunities that engage their interests and challenge their intellectual boundaries beyond a traditional high school experience. The mission of BRVGS is to inspire and challenge a diverse body of students, representative of the communities from which they come, through unique, rigorous, technology-centered learning experiences, and to prepare them with the skills to be the leaders, collaborators and innovators of the future. The core curriculum for the Blue Ridge Virginia Governor's School is carefully planned by qualified subject matter instructors and approved by the BRVGS Joint Board, with representatives from all participating school divisions. These courses are uniquely designed to emphasize connections between disciplines, real-world situations, collaboration, integration of technology, and innovative approaches to learning. These courses, in combination with advanced courses at each participating local high school and college-level offerings, work together to provide a rigorous course of study for BRVGS students. As students progress into 11th and 12th grades, the BRVGS Core Courses are created to make learning an active process. Students must actively pursue excellence. Students will be given all of the resources necessary for success, but will not be given 'answers'. Group collaboration and problem solving are emphasized. All courses in core academic areas are taught at the gifted or enriched level. In December 2022, the BRVGS Joint Board approved changing the name from Blue Ridge Virtual Governor’s School to Blue Ridge Virginia Governor’s School.
