About Boston University Tanglewood Institute
BUTI was established in 1966 by Boston University at the invitation of Boston Symphony Orchestra Music Director Erich Leinsdorf. Modeled off the Tanglewood Music Center, a training program for college-aged and pre-professional musicians, BUTI is but one step in the Tanglewood learning continuum. As a program of BU College of Fine Arts, a BUTI summer delivers a rigorous, credit-bearing curriculum to young instrumentalists, composers, and vocalists via an immersive residential music experience at its 64-acre campus in Lenox, MA. As a leader in young artists training, BUTI annually selects 430 students by audition from an applicant pool of over 1,000 students. This cohort aged 14-20 represents more than 40 states and 10 countries and becomes the next generation of performers, teachers, and arts leaders. The student experience is guided by high educational standards alongside principles of professionalism, empowerment, mutual respect, and a commitment to excellence via many voices. Exemplifying that commitment, BUTI’s Ann Hobson Pilot Partner Network comprises 13 organizations whose mission is to support students representing underserved groups and communities. Partnerships are nurtured each year through application and scholarship benefits, in-person audition opportunities, and regular leadership meetings, to foster student community and belonging. These values also define a relationship with the greater Berkshires community. Students and faculty present over 60 open performances each summer, and an additional 30 performances at unconventional venues as part of a robust community engagement program. Students learn to speak publicly, articulate musical ideas to a non-musical audience, and build genuine personal relationships with listeners from the stage. In service to its mission, strategic planning, purposeful evaluation, and quantitative data provides BUTI with meaningful feedback about impact, informs future work, and shapes the artistic community at large.
