About British Racing Drivers' Club
The British Racing Drivers' Club is a private members' club for British and Commonwealth racing drivers of an elite standard who have achieved a prescribed amount of success at a sufficiently high level in their racing. For racing drivers, Full Membership of the BRDC is considered the equivalent of what a national cap is to other sports like football, cricket and rugby. Associate Membership is reserved for those who have made an exceptional contribution to British motor sport over a considerable period of time, and who are not qualified for Full Membership. Racing drivers from other nationalities who have achieved exceptional success, or figures in motor sport who have not met the aforementioned conditions, may be invited by the Board of Directors to be Honorary Members if they are considered desirable as BRDC Members. Founded in 1928, the BRDC's objectives were to promote the interests of motor sport generally, to celebrate any specific performance in motor sport, to extend hospitality to racing drivers from overseas and to further the interests of British drivers competing abroad. Following the decision for the BRDC to move into race organisation, the first BRDC 500-Mile Race was held at Brooklands Circuit in October 1929. After the Second World War, the BRDC began its association with Silverstone Circuit, acquiring the lease from the Royal Automobile Club in 1952 and subsequently acquiring the freehold from the Ministry of Defence in 1971. Through its wholly-owned subsidiary company Silverstone Circuits Ltd, which was formed in 1966 to develop commercial aspects of the property, the Club have been responsible for the growth of Silverstone Circuit into the World-class motor racing venue and British Grand Prix promoter that it is today. Through the BRDC's SuperStars Programme and Rising Star Scheme, as well as the Club's involvement in the Silverstone Autosport BRDC Award, great work is being done to support the next generation of talented racing drivers.
