About Us – Brown Girl Society Who We Are Brown Girl* Society (BGS) was founded with a clear and compassionate mission: to create a supportive, inclusive, and empowering space for South Asian women and non-binary students at the University of Edinburgh. In a university environment where these communities often find themselves underrepresented, BGS has emerged as a vital space of connection, solidarity, and celebration. Through celebrating the rich and complex diversity of South Asian cultures, and by providing carefully tailored resources, social events, and online communication platforms, we’ve cultivated a network that fosters personal growth, intercultural understanding, and a deep sense of community. Our commitment to inclusivity has made us a key player in shaping more equitable, joyful and meaningful student experiences on campus. Our Purpose and Vision At its core, BGS exists to ensure that South Asian women and non-binary students feel seen, heard, and supported. We aim to address the unique challenges our members face - from navigating cultural identity and intergenerational expectations, to adapting to student life in a new city or country. We strive to act as a bridge between students of varying backgrounds, whether international, semester-abroad, or UK-based and create spaces where shared and different experiences can be celebrated. We plan to strengthen our mentorship network and continue building meaningful collaborations across campus and beyond. Whether through academic workshops, cultural festivals, or quiet cups of chai, our aim is to continue building a community where all members can feel rooted.
