About Byte Biltong

We are a family-owned business with roots in South Africa. We grew up in South Africa where Biltong, Chili Bites, and Droëwors are more of a way of life than just a snack! Our journey started in 1999 when our family emigrated to the U.S.A. from South Africa. As we found our feet in our new home, we enjoyed all the differences, exploring new tastes and ways of doing things, none the less, we missed a couple of “things” from our homeland, of which Biltong was the Major one! In 2001 we decided to try our hand at making Biltong. The very first batch we made was with meat bought from a local Ostrich farmer. Total failure! This made us more determined to get to a point where we could make our own edible versions. And not with Ostrich meat! Over the last 20-something years, we have experimented with multiple recipes, different meat cuts, etc. We believe we have found a mixture that is reminiscent of the taste of authentic South African Biltong - using beef! With feedback received from ‘clients’, some of them claiming to have “become addicted”, came the desire to share our craft with others. In 2020 despite a World-Wide Pandemic, we moved to the Tampa area, gained USDA approval, built out a facility, and went through permitting. This was no small feat, but due to our typical South African mentality (Giving up is not an option!) and tenacity, we are on our way to something great. Byte Biltong was born out of a love for country and culture. We love the product we produce, and love sharing something that we grew up with that is healthy and could be consumed by young and old, and everyone in-between! We hope that our newfound friends will enjoy our Biltong as much as we do.
