The insulation division of CEM Ltd manufactures and supplies a wide range of cast resin products to meet the needs of the electrical power industry. Our products include terminal bushings for distribution transformers, stand-off insulators, and circuit breaker/housing mouldings for indoor and outdoor distribution switchgear up to 36kV. At CEM we have a great understanding of what is required in the casting process. This is why we can offer a complete tooling package from design through to manufacture. At CEM we utilise the latest technology in computerised metering and dispensing equipment to maintain correct mix ratios in a wide range of products for indoor distribution switchgear. All casting is also controlled by state-of-the-art temperature controllers. We work with many companies on design and prototypes and are happy to liaise with individual needs. CEM uses epoxy resins based on bis-phenol A, which meet the requirements of BS3816 fully, and are used for indoor applications. We also use cyclo-aliphatic epoxy resins for outdoor applications. Polyurethane can also be processed for customers requiring this material. To complement our casting activities CEM manufactures and maintains its own tooling and is a great believer in controlling all ancillary processes. To that end, all copper-work is fabricated, machined, shot-blasted in-house. The option of electroplating, with either tin or silver, is also available to our clients, and this process is also undertaken on site. Our electrical test facility includes partial discharge measurement and has an AC power frequency which will withstand capability of 80kV rms. Quality control is a very high priority and CEM uses ‘state-of-the-art’ temperature controllers in the casting process. Each component manufactured is marked by a unique number and logged on a database to provide an audit trail to ensure that all components are traceable to source.
