About C.L. Benton & Sons
Beautiful beaches, amusements, and scenic golf courses have put Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on the map as a favorite destination. C.L. Benton & Sons, Inc., is a construction services company based in the heart of Myrtle Beach, that has contributed to the attractions by building the area's first golf course, a number of resorts, malls, restaurants, and hotels. The company is also responsible for the construction of Highway 17, the road that runs through the center of Myrtle Beach. Founded by Casper Leon Benton, C.L. Benton & Sons has been providing heavy construction services to the area since the 1920's. Casper Benton built Pine Lakes golf course and assisted in the construction of the course at the Dunes Golf and Beach Club. When Casper's son James and Leon joined the business, they worked on a third golf course - Myrtlewood. Casper's son, James, eventually took over the family business, buying the others out and incorporating C.L. Benton and Sons in 1964. Today a third generation - James' sons Carson and Lawton - are at the helm. Having joined in 1983 respectively, the brothers oversee company operations. Today the scope of this family-owned business is broad. Primarly the company comprises three divisions roadwork; water and sewer; and pile driving or deep foundations. Additionally, C.L. Benton & Sons builds golf courses and works on subdivisions, airports, malls, and restaurants. Most of the site work is local but the pile-driving division works on projects throughout the state. C.L. Benton & Sons major projects in Myrtle Beach include the Wachesaw Plantation, a Tom Fazio designed golf course and private community, and Ocean Creek, a private oceanfront resort. The company was responsible for the construction of Waccamaw Pottery, one of the first factory outlet stores/malls in the country. In the amusement arena, they have built Fantasy Harbor, a five-theater attraction, as well as the Ripley's Aquarium and the 800-seat Captain George's Seafood Restaurant.
