About Cal Maritime Ocean Initiative

Established in 2014 with the motto We Know Ocean, the Cal Maritime Ocean Initiative grew out of an interdisciplinary research project on Ocean Literacy among college-age students at Cal Maritime and peer institutions. Now officially chartered as a California State University Research Institute with multidisciplinary Affiliated Faculty and a distinguished Advisory Board from across the United States, CMOI now seeks to support and encourage a wide range of work bringing the humanities into conversation with social sciences, ocean science, and practical maritime disciplines. All our projects will share a common goal: to increase a critical understanding of how humans and the oceans interact and how these vexed and complex relationships have formed, how they have gained power, and how they should best be managed.
