About California Youth Defender Center
The California Youth Defender Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1999 to address the lack of specialized training of trial and appellate lawyers defending youth, and the appalling conditions in California’s juvenile facilities. Over the past 25 years, CYDC has worked steadily to build an infrastructure of support and training for lawyers defending youth, equipping them to represent youth effectively and optimize outcomes. Today, under the leadership of three highly experienced staff, a hard-working Board of Directors with deep defender roots, an Advisory Board of on-call experts in juvenile law, and a powerful volunteer network of defenders, policy advocates and social workers from across the state, CYDC is focused on four major initiatives: Defender Capacity Building: we build defender capacity and excellence by providing in person and online trainings, litigation tools, and a dynamic online platform to exchange legal questions and resources in real time. Strategic Litigation & Amicus: we improve outcomes for youth by strengthening the law through litigation at the trial, appellate, and supreme court levels. Youth Justice Policy & Reform: we expand alternatives to youth incarceration and negative impacts of the system by engaging in legislative and policy advocacy. Anti-Racism & Equity in Youth Defense: we aim to decrease disparities and structural racism in the youth justice system.
