CAMP SHIFRA Many young people today experience concerns regarding their body image and are challenged with difficulties controlling their weight. In fact, nearly two-thirds of adults in the United States are known to be overweight, and the percentage of children and adolescents who are defined as overweight has more than doubled in the last 40 years. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention close to 20% of adolescents ages 12 – 19 are overweight. It has long been known that the most effective way of controlling one’s weight is by embarking on a total all-encompassing program that addresses every aspect of one’s lifestyle. Towards this end, Mrs. Leeba Chaya Levin of Chicago has undertaken to create a summer camp specifically designed to meet the needs of teenagers who struggle with their weight and body image. Camp Shifra, located in Narrowsburg, New York, will be opening for its first season this July. Camp Shifra will integrate exciting traditional summer camp activities with a comprehensive program geared towards guiding teenage girls in tackling their weight issues, developing a healthy body image and learning how to turn to Hashem instead of the food. From fitness exercises to menu planning, learning how to make healthy food choices, nutrition classes and food preparation, the girls will spend fun-filled weeks in an environment that will nurture their well-being. The easy camaraderie and support shared among teenage girls in the relaxed atmosphere of a summer camp provides a unique opportunity for them to absorb the lessons for a lifetime. The program promises to be motivational and goal-oriented, with special guest personalities invited to lecture. There will also be daily Shiurim with popular speakers and Maggidei Shiur. Camp Shifra is Ruchniyus camp aimed towards helping girls improve their lives.
