About Canal Society of New Jersey
The Canal Society of New Jersey is a non-profit organization formed to 1969 to foster the education and historical preservation of New Jersey’s two towpath canals; The Morris Canal and the Delaware & Raritan Canal. EVENTS The Canal Society of NJ maintains a museum at Waterloo Village, which is open every weekend from June through October and contains numerous displays and photographs relating to both the Morris and Delaware & Raritan Canal. The Canal Society also operates numerous Canal Days at Waterloo, which usually open the last Saturday in June, and run through the end of October. The Canal Days feature building tours, canal boat rides, exhibits, demonstrations, live music, and entry into the Canal Society museum. PROGRAMS The Canal Society of NJ offers five program meetings a year that are open to both members and the public, and feature lectures and presentations related to the history of NJ canals, and related topics. These meetings are usually held Friday evenings, at the Morris County Cultural Center in Morristown, NJ. PARTNERSHIPS The Canal Society of NJ partners with numerous groups, counties, and municipalities to further the promotion and historical education of NJ canals, and to assist in the development of the Morris Canal Greenway, a continues effort to preserve the path of the canal across the state. COMMUNICATION The Canal Society of NJ publishes a Newsletter called 'On the Level' three times a year, detailing programs, events and projects for which the Canal Society is involved, or which involve the two New Jersey towpath canals.
