About Canterbury Earlwood Caring Association
CECAL is a non-profit community organisation which has been providing neighbourhood centre services to the Earlwood community and surrounding suburbs for over 35 years. The beginnings of CECAL emerged in 1964 resulting from efforts of women who formed the Silver Threads Club. In its initial phase, CECAL operated from the Earlwood Methodist Church and volunteers provided a home visiting program to support aged and frail-aged people in the community. In 1975, The NSW Council on the Ageing (COTA) conducted research on the needs of older people in the Marrickville, Rockdale and Canterbury Local Government Areas. Following a public meeting to discuss these research findings, CECAL registered as a company limited by guarantee and in 1979, CECAL received a grant from the then NSW Department of Youth & Community Services (now the NSW Department of Family and Community Services) to provide funded community services for the residents of Earlwood and surrounding suburbs. Our Purpose CECAL’s purpose is to work collaboratively with community members and other organisations to develop and provide services and programs which are inclusive of and relevant to all members of the Canterbury community. We focus on building community capacity in identified areas of need and providing a caring, supported environment where all people feel welcomed and safe to actively participate. Our Neighborhood Centre and Community Development programs focus on children, youth, seniors and families and we provide referrals and advocacy with and for those in need and partner with others to provide services throughout the Canterbury LGA. Our Vision An inclusive, healthy and harmonious community. Our Values The values which underpin our work include: Openness, Innovation, Excellence and Community Focussed. Our Mission CECAL plays a leading role in building and strengthening connections and enriching lives in our local communities.
