About Capt. Hook's MTAC
MTAC, Medical Training in Austere Conditions, is a business whose origins come from a core belief that we can get better at saving lives under conditions that are far from perfect if we learn and train with those that have done this in the field and have saved lives. We also understood that this training is not readily available to people in the medical, public health and emergency fields, and we have the formula to bring it to those people who need it. Our Director, Dr. Matthew Welder is a board-certified anesthesia provider and retired Army officer who is nationally recognized as an innovative leader in operational readiness. He developed the operational readiness programs of study for Dive Medicine, Military Mountain Medicine Course, Cold Weather Medicine and Avalanche 1 at USU. He served as the lead subject matter expert in the development and training of the Expeditionary Resuscitative Surgical Team – Africa and focuses his operational training on clinical, physical, emotional and operational readiness platforms. His efforts were pivotal in developing readiness and high reliability within the Military Health System. During his military career, Dr. Welder served as an expert in operational medicine with multiple special operations combat deployments and remains clinically relevant in anesthesia. He is an out of the box thinker, with a motivation to educate the future clinicians. Dr. Welder provides an environment where hospital providers can use their clinical skills and adapt them to the austere environment. Learning to save lives out of a backpack.
