About Care & Cure Institute
When founders Mark Borman and Andrew Gumpert’s respective children were born with catastrophic epilepsy, they quickly learned of the critical shortage of pediatric epilepsy doctors in the field of medicine. Not only did they know firsthand how difficult treatment and specialists are to access, they also heard from other families who expressed the same trouble and feelings of helplessness. With this knowledge, they created the Care & Cure Dinner, an annual charity benefit in 2006 to fund pediatric epileptology fellowships in the Greater Los Angeles area. The fundraiser soon became one of the top special event epilepsy fundraisers in the nation, funding 4 endowments at the major epilepsy centers in the Los Angeles area, the education of 45 doctors, research, and special treatments. The Care & Cure Institute (the “Institute”) is a nationwide expansion of this mission to care for children with epilepsy and eventually cure this disease. The Care & Cure Institute seeks to improve the lives of children living with epilepsy by financing the final, fellowship stage of medical training for pediatric epilepsy specialists, called epileptologists. Through this process, the Institute will increase access to treatments and doctors and create a larger pediatric epileptologist network in order to achieve the most optimal health outcomes for children with epilepsy.
