About Center for Arts and Urbanistics
ZK/U is an artist residency, a research and production space for social inquiry, a platform for exhibitions, conferences, workshops, and related formats. Opened in 2012, ZK/U is located in a former cargo station in the Stadtgarten Moabit. Through exhibitions, conferences and workshops, ZK/U addresses urban social challenges. In addition to the regular in-house formats such as OPENHAUS, GÜTERMARKT or SPEISEKINO, a variety of EU partner projects and neighborhood formats take place at ZK/U. The ZKU is run by the non-profit association KUNSTrePUBLIK e.V.. Depending on the number of projects, between 15-25 people work at the ZK/U in the areas of residency, project coordination and event management. The goal of ZK/U is to connect global discourse with neighborhood practice, and to share, develop and make publicly available the experiences made with other organizations and cultural workers. Concrete examples of this work are the 'Citytoolbox' (www.citytoolbox.net), the Hacking Urban Furniture project (http://www.hackingurbanfurniture.net/) or the Shared Cities project (https://www.sharedcities.eu/). In the last 3 years, ZKU developed the 'Haus der Statistik' project (www.hausderstatistik.org) with other institutions. Here, a vacant building complex is developed into a house for administration, affordable housing and cultural facilities in a transsectoral cooperation of urban communities and administration. In the last 10 years, ZK/U has worked with more than 750 artists* in residence, realized more than 250 exhibitions, cooperated with more than 150 different cultural institutions worldwide and received more than 20,000 visitors annually.
