About Center for Rural Energy Security

The energy industry is among the most highly regulated industries in the country. Development, adoption and deployment of energy technologies rely heavily on state and federal energy policies, environmental policies and industrial regulatory systems that shape investment incentives. Beyond energy technology itself, energy policy and infrastructure development have broader social impacts that must be understood and considered. In addition to environmental, climate and human health effects, energy resource policy and infrastructure development have economic and social implications associated with things such as land use, accessibility and affordability of energy services, and private property rights. The Center for Rural Energy Security at Mizzou is the first University-affiliated energy policy research institute in the United States to bring a holistic approach to energy policy research that includes a specific mission to address the implications of energy policy and technology innovation for agriculture, rural communities and rural economic development. CRES brings together a multidisciplinary group of social science researchers to work collaboratively on a range of energy-related policy issues and their potential effects on rural economies and rural communities. In addition to engaging in leading scholarly research, CRES will bridge the gaps between traditional academic publications, policy-oriented whitepapers, and objective, science-based policy analysis projects for industry and policymakers. It will serve as a connecting point between academic researchers, legislators, and industry to facilitate access to data and resources to bolster academic scholarship, policy relevance, and ultimately, more effective energy policy for rural Missouri, the Midwest, and rural America.
