About Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement
Amid rising political polarization and public distrust, higher education—and especially schools of public policy—has a vital role to play. Founded by UC Berkeley’s Class of 1968, the Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement (CCDE) prepares current and future policy leaders to navigate contentious discussions, democratize the policy process, and collaboratively address today’s most pressing public policy issues. CCDE offers specialized courses in community-based participatory policymaking and constructive dialogue, equipping students with essential skills to navigate and transform conflict in policy contexts. The Center also oversees the Democracy Fellows Program, which fosters meaningful collaboration between academia and community-based organizations across California. The program helps to identify and promote policy innovations that strengthen democracy, particularly at the state and local levels. In addition, CCDE conducts and funds research, hosts public events, trains students and faculty, and partners nationally with peer centers focused on democratic engagement. In August 2024, Dr. Meredith Sadin began her appointment as Faculty Director of CCDE. Sadin is an Assistant Research Professor of Public Policy.
