About Centro de Información
Our Mission: Empowering the Latino and immigrant community to integrate effectively. Centro de Información was founded in 1972 in Elgin, Illinois, to help address the needs of a small but growing Hispanic community in the northwestern suburbs of Chicago, which had limited knowledge of the cultural, linguistic, and legal systems of the USA. Since then, Centro has provided information and resources in Spanish in a culturally sensitive manner to help thousands of immigrants overcome language and cultural barriers. The mission of the Information Center is to empower Hispanics with the ability to effectively integrate into the larger community through the provision of information, education, citizenship, and wellness. Currently, the Information Center is one of the 34 official Welcome Centers in the State of Illinois for immigrants and refugees and serves thousands of clients each year. In addition to the Welcome Team, the Center is a Department of Justice accredited organization with accredited Immigration Counselors who help clients navigate immigration law, including, but not limited to, naturalization, DACA renewals, removal of residency conditions, obtaining visas, asylum status, and more. Centro's Community Resource Team helps clients, often in crisis situations, access food through Centro's emergency food pantry or enroll in SNAP, various health care programs, and other resources. Centro has three office locations in Elgin, Hanoverpark, and Carpentersville.
