About Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica (CNAO)
CNAO, struttura ospedaliera istituita dal Ministero della Salute nel 2001, è l’unico centro italiano e il sesto nel mondo in grado di effettuare l’adroterapia sia con protoni che con ioni carbonio, un trattamento avanzato per la cura dei tumori non operabili e resistenti alla radioterapia con i raggi X. I fasci di adroni sono prodotti da un acceleratore di particelle simile a quelli del CERN di Ginevra. I trattamenti sono riconosciuti e rimborsabili dal Sistema Sanitario Nazionale. Al CNAO si effettua anche attività di ricerca con l’obiettivo di un continuo miglioramento della tecnologia del centro a vantaggio dei pazienti e sull’efficacia delle cure. CNAO is an hospital structure set up in 2001 by the Ministry of Health, is the only Italian centre and the sixth in the world able to use hadrontherapy with both protons and carbon ions. It is an advanced method for treating non-operable and radio-resistant tumors. The hadron beams are produced by a particle accelerator, which is similar to the CERN in Geneva. The treatments are recognised and reimbursed by the National Health System. At CNAO is carried out an activity research with the aim of a continuous improvement of the technologies for the benefits of patients and the effectiveness of care.
