About Charlotte E. Ray Legal Society

The Charlotte E. Ray Legal Society (CERLS) is a nonprofit organization named in honor of Charlotte E. Ray, the first Black woman to become a lawyer in the United States. A trailblazer in her time, Ray's courage and dedication opened doors for countless Black women in the legal profession, paving the way for future generations. Our mission is to continue her legacy by increasing the 2% representation of Black women attorneys in the United States. We are a national organization, represented in over 20 law schools and universities across the country. We are committed to supporting Black women at every stage of their journey to becoming attorneys, from undergraduate pre-law students to those currently in law school. CERLS hosts virtual events, workshops, and programs designed to empower, educate, and inspire Black women who are passionate about pursuing legal careers. Through mentorship, professional development, and a strong network of like-minded individuals, we are dedicated to fostering a community where Black women can thrive and make a lasting impact in the legal profession.
