About Chernobyl Children's Lifeline (Bristol Link)
The Bristol Link of CCLL is part of a national charity founded in 1992. There are currently over 60 Links established throughout the United Kingdom, raising money to support the children of Belarus and Ukraine, whose lives will be forever affected by the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. We are a team of enthusiastic volunteers who continually raise funds to bring 16 Belarussian children to Bristol each summer- for 4 weeks of fresh air, uncontaminated food and fun, as well as dental and eye check ups. They are from the town of Osipovichi its nearby village of Protasevichi, where deprivation levels are high. Imagine: Living the rest of your life in a radioactive polluted environment. There is no escape. You are eating contaminated food, but what else can you do? Imagine: Coming to the UK and eating fresh food and breathing fresh air and going home with your immune system recharged. Imagine: Knowing that people DO care. But our efforts don't stop there! We also support the village school in Protasevichi, including modernising the heating system; equipping the school with it's first ever indoor toilets; providing audio-visual equipment to establish an Assembly Room; and supplying sports equipment. In Summer 2017 we also replaced the rotting and broken windows in the village Kindergarten. We even fund respite camps, with specialist medical resources and nursing, for children (and their families) who are too ill to travel. So, what do we need? PEOPLE, MONEY and IDEAS! The World Health Organisation states that 500,000 children in Belarus are at risk- only 6% are considered to be healthy. Nationally almost 50,000 children have stayed with host families since 1992. We can only continue to do this work with the assistance of local people, charities and businesses. The search for individuals and businesses to support our work is a constant one.
