The Chicago Youth Advancement Initiative (CYAI) is a youth-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit empowering young people across Chicago through hands-on, peer-led education in financial literacy, entrepreneurship, computer science, and robotics. Founded in 2024 by three high school students—Michael Francis, Nick Derbis, and Maclane Zich—CYAI was created to give youth a leadership role in shaping programming that directly impacts their peers. In partnership with trusted community organizations like Chicago Youth Centers (CYC), CYAI delivers immersive learning experiences that prioritize real-world skills and long-term educational independence. In its inaugural year, CYAI launched a 10-week entrepreneurship and financial literacy program at CYC’s Sidney Epstein Youth Center, culminating in a “Shark Tank Jr.” pitch competition with $500 in youth-led business awards, supported by Wintrust Bank. With additional grant funding secured, CYAI is expanding to a new program focused on robotics and coding, where students will learn to build and program LEGO robots. CYAI is built on the belief that when youth lead youth, change becomes both sustainable and deeply connected to the communities it serves.
