About Chicken Ka Kee
In 1979, Mr Thian Boon Hua opened a modest stall in Chinatown, serving Cantonese-style chicken rice. His dedication to quality and service had turned his small hawker stall into a full-fledged restaurant on Balestier Road, giving rise to what is now one of Singapore’s most recognisable names in Chicken Rice — Boon Tong Kee (文東記). Decades later, that same pioneering spirit lives on through his son, with a brand built not just on tradition, but transformation. Meet Chicken Ka Kee (文家記) — a second-generation brand rooted in heritage, building our own legacy by becoming Halal and creating more space at the table for everyone to bond over food. Where Mr Thian had named his quaint stall, 文東記 with 東 (East) symbolising the richness of Oriental culinary culture and 記 (record) carrying his hope to leave a lasting legacy, we’ve introduced the chinese character 家 (home) to reflect our belief that Chicken Rice should be a place of belonging. This transformation from "East" to "Home" isn't just linguistic, it's philosophical. While Mr Thian's 文東記 celebrated regional heritage, our 文家記 opens that heritage to become everyone's home. This new character represents our commitment to inclusivity through a Halal menu, in hopes that Chicken Ka Kee becomes a warm, welcoming space for all, regardless of race, religion, or background. Our English name, Chicken Ka Kee, is also a romanised nod to the Mandarin Wen Jia Ji (文家記), chosen for its familiarity and resonance with Singaporeans.
