AT A GLANCE The Children's Discovery Museum of the Golden Crescent *Serves as a community resource providing interactive educational opportunities and engaging family experiences for residents and visitors. *Provides opportunities for children to demonstrate and develop their skills in critical thinking, problem solving, and creativity. *Support and augment schools’ efforts to educate children. *Since the museum’s opening in 2002, we have had more than 200,000 visitors. We hope to continue to grow these numbers and it is possible with your help! *We serve the 11 counties that make up the Golden Crescent region. They are Victoria, Bee, Calhoun, Dewitt, Goliad, Gonzales, Jackson, Karnes, Lavaca, Refugio, and Wharton Counties. The population is approximately 150,000 in the region. *As part of our new museum initiative, STEAM [science, technology, engineering, art, and math], will play a vital role in the exhibits, programs, and outreach offered with a focus on literacy as the basis for building blocks in achievement in all 5 subjects. Our goal is to foster inquiry and problem solving skills among our communities earliest learners. Children’s museums help children develop essential foundational skills. In the past ten years, neuroscience has confirmed what the social sciences have long contended, that the first years of life are essential to future learning. Grounded in well established pedagogy, children’s museums are leading a movement that combines specific learning objectives with play in informal learning environments that are developmentally appropriate for infants, toddlers, and children. The Children’s Discovery Museum celebrated its grand re-opening on March 11, 2017 with Phase I of their re-branding master plan. The campaign to launch Phase II is underway to bring even more exhibits that will initiate new ways to foster critical thinking, creativity and innovation among the children of the Golden Crescent.
