About Chinle Planting Hope

As a grassroots organization, the mission of Chinle Planting Hope is to practice creative community development on the Navajo Nation that builds up the mental, physical and spiritual wellbeing of all community members. We are a Navajo-controlled organization that aims to improve the quality of life for Indigenous people in rural Chinle, Arizona. The poverty rate in Chinle far exceeds that of the national average. 2019 U.S. census data reports that Chinle has an overall poverty rate of 46.9%, with 64% of children living in households meeting the threshold for poverty. Many families lack electricity, running water, and a reliable means of transportation. Only half of those who live on tribal land have access to high-speed internet and, not surprisingly, the children of Chinle experience significant educational challenges, with the Arizona State 2018-2019 Educational Report revealing that 67% of Chinle’s third graders and 89% of high schoolers lack reading proficiency. Because Chinle does not have a public library or playground, Chinle Planting Hope is actively working to establish an inclusive Community Center where local families can connect, and multiple needs can be met. It will be a community gathering place and will include a food bank, community garden, bike shop, playground, thrift store, and, because the nearest public library is over 70 miles away, a Bookmobile. This community space will allow residents of Chinle to safely gather, exercise, and learn together.
