About Choctaw Freedmen Citizenship Footprints
Choctaw Freedmen Citizenship Footprints, Inc. organization mission is to protect and preserve our history, heritage and culture of the Choctaw Freedmen and their descendants. Educate our supporters and the public about the many contributions Choctaw Freedmen ancestors and their descendants have made to the history of the Choctaw Nation, Oklahoma & the U.S. Choctaw Freedmen are former enslaved African-Americans who were emancipated and granted citizenship in the Choctaw Nation after the Civil War, which were the requirements of "The Treaty of 1866" that was signed by the U.S. Government and the Choctaw Nation. In 1830s....Thousands of Enslaved African-Americans traveled on the "Trail of Tears" with the Choctaw Indians to the New Indian Territory known as SE Oklahoma today. Lived and co-existed with the Choctaw Indians, Deforested the new land, Built new communities, towns and cities (Tom, Kullituckalo, Harris, Hugo, Idabel, Valliant, etc.) we know as shown on the map today. The Choctaw Freedmen were officially adopted as "full" members and citizens into the Choctaw Nation in 1885. However, ninety-eight (98 years) later in 1983 “the Choctaw Nation added a ‘by-blood’ requirement [for membership] into the constitution that excluded many Choctaw Freedmen from the tribe. We are also committed to reclaiming our “membership, rights and privileges as Native citizens” of the Choctaw Nation. It is important that our 501(3)c CFCF, Inc. organization continue its mission to focus on preserving the history, heritage legacy and educating the public about the many contributions these Choctaw Freedmen ancestors/ people made who once lived as early as the 1800s in the New Indian Territory (McCurtain County) of the Choctaw Nation (aka) Southeastern Oklahoma.
