About CIRM (Comité International Radio-Maritime)
CIRM is a non-profit international maritime trade association formed to promote bridge electronic navigation and communication technology for the safety of life at sea. As such, CIRM fosters relations between organizations concerned with electronic systems and information technology and as a Non Government Organization, has Observer Status at the United Nations' International Maritime Organization, London. Maritime industry companies join CIRM in order to gain a deeper understanding of specialist areas, contribute to regulatory and compliance issues via working groups and have considerable networking opportunities both within the community and worldwide. CIRM provides the Secretary for International Electrotechnical Commission Technical Committee 80 (IEC TC 80) and has many members contributing to this committee which produces operational and performance requirements together with test methods for maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems. The committee work programme is associated with that of the IMO by mirroring the performance standards adopted by IMO in its resolutions, with associated relevant ITU recommendations. TC 80 standards support IMO resolutions and non-SOLAS and shore applications. Its scope is “to prepare standards for maritime navigation and radiocommunication equipment and systems, making use of electrotechnical, electronic, electroacoustic, electro-optical and data processing techniques for use on ships and where appropriate on shore”.
