Americus, Georgia is located in Sumter County in southwest Georgia 132 miles from Atlanta and nine miles from Plains, the home of America's 39th President and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate, Jimmy Carter. The City of Americus operates under the City Manager form of government. Policy making and legislative authority are vested in the governing body which consists of a Mayor and six council members all elected on a nonpartisan basis. Council members serve four-year staggered terms, with three council members elected every two years. The Mayor is elected at large to serve a four-year term. The six council members are elected by district. The governing body is responsible for passing ordinances, adopting the budget and appointing the City Manager, Municipal Court Judge and the City Attorney. The City Manager is responsible for carrying out the policies and ordinances of the governing body and for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the government.
